The Survivor Supper is an annual event celebrating cancer survivors from the community. Approximately 500 individuals attended this event to celebrate the over 200 survivors who were also in attendance. Mrs. North Dakota International 2009 was invited as a guest to promote programs and services through the American Cancer Society. It is an overwhelming experience to be in the presence of so many survivors. Purple is the color of survivorship - and all survivors are given a purple t-shirt to wear - the crowd was colored in purple. It was an amazing sight! My date and I (my wonderful husband) set up our booth and shook hands with many individuals. I got hugs from survivors and I gave hugs to survivors. I even got a hug from an Alien! I signed the postcard for Senator Conrad in support of Healthcare Reform and told my personal story of how I have been touched by cancer for Picture A Cure. When it was time to take our place at the reserved table my husband and I just didn't feel right about sitting and doing nothing....so we hopped into the line of servers! Along with other volunteers, we proceeded to serve the crowd a delicious meal catered by Space Aliens, filled water pitchers and coffee pots and brought cake out for desert. Celebrating cancer survivors is a wonderful obligation to all and the love and spirit everyone feels at such an event can only touch your soul.
